Google New Inactive Account Policy
Google Implements New Inactive Account Policy: Google has announced updates to its inactive account policy, stating that Google Accounts that have remained unused for a period of two years or more will be deleted. The decision is driven by security concerns, as dormant accounts with outdated passwords and no two-factor authentication are more susceptible to compromise.
Moving forward, Google reserves the right to delete accounts and their contents if they have not been used or signed into for at least two years. This policy covers various services, including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Meet, Calendar, YouTube, and Google Photos.
It’s important to note that this policy applies to personal Google Accounts and not those created for businesses or schools. Users with inactive accounts can expect their accounts to be deleted starting in December 2023. However, Google plans to provide ample notice before taking action.
The first wave of deletions will primarily target accounts that were created but have never been used again. To ensure users are aware of the impending account deletion, Google will send multiple notifications to the account email address and the recovery email, if provided.
To maintain an active Google Account, Google advises signing in at least once every two years. Any recent account activity, such as reading or sending emails, using Google Drive, watching YouTube videos, downloading Google Play apps, utilizing Google Search, having an active subscription, or using Sign in with Google, will be considered as account activity.
Previously, Google had planned to only remove content from unused accounts while keeping the accounts intact. However, the new policy involves the deletion of inactive accounts altogether.
